GSM (grams per square meter) is how paper weight is measured. The higher the number, the thicker and stiffer the sheet. For seed paper it affects feel, folding, durability and how the paper plants. Here is how to choose.
Lower GSM (thinner)
- Best for: invitations, folded cards, confetti, lightweight inserts.
- Feels: flexible, easy to fold and tear for planting.
- Trade-off: less rigid, so not ideal where the product needs to stand up to handling.
Mid GSM
- Best for: greeting cards, sleeves, bookmarks.
- Feels: substantial but still foldable.
- A safe all-rounder for most branded materials.
Higher GSM (thicker)
- Best for: business cards, hang tags, coasters, pennants.
- Feels: solid, rigid, durable.
- Trade-off: doesn't fold cleanly, so it is better used flat.
A quick way to decide
Ask two questions. Does it need to fold? If yes, lean lower GSM. Does it need to survive handling, hung on a garment, carried around or propped up? If yes, lean higher GSM. Match the weight to the job and the product feels right in the hand.
